What I am saying is that they don’t have to be gourmet and you don’t have to feel bad or guilty about the foods that you provide for your child. I’m sure there are a lot of lunchboxes that look better than this. I am not saying that these are what you should aspire to. I have shared what lunch boxes look like in my family. Choose something from each nutrient box and you’ll be providing a well-balanced meal. Not that I am suggesting you fill the lunchbox with one type of food because it covers multiple categories. Whatever fruit and vegetables your child likes, wholegrain breadĪs you can see many of the foods cover more than one nutrient category. Milk, dairy, nuts, seeds, cakes, muffins, biscuits, avocado, coconut, salami, cold meats When packing a lunch try to include: NutrientĬold meats, cheese, milk, nuts, seeds, beans/lentils, hummusīread, crackers, tortilla, pita, muffins, cakes, biscuits, starchy fruits and vegetables Fat also provides important fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Packing their lunchbox full of low calorie foods just means that they have to eat a larger quantity to feel full and satisfied.Ĭhildren have small stomachs so they need some fat containing foods to meet their energy requirements for the day. Whether it be morning tea or lunch time, their goal is to finish as quickly as possible so they can hang out with their friends. Children have limited time to eat their food. Priority ranking for childrenĬhildren are more concerned about getting out and playing rather than appreciating any gourmet lunch. This will usually just lead to nothing being eaten. But it doesn’t mean that the whole lunchbox is a new experience with the belief that because there is no choice the child will have to eat it. Having the opportunity to experience different foods may mean offering something slightly different in their lunch box. Some children will eat anything right from the start and others won’t. As long as they are given the opportunity to experience different foods their tastes and preferences will develop and they will increase the variety of food that they find acceptable. This does change as they get older but by this stage I think if they start complaining then the responsibility of making their lunches becomes their own.Ĭhildren have children’s tastes. They’re okay with eating the same foods frequently. Children eat better when offered familiar foods. The problem is that it’s us parents that are bored. No wonder we get bored making the same old thing. We send our kids off to school with lunch about 200 days of the year. It is familiar to us and to our kids.Īre varied lunches for us or our children? We send our kids off to school with the food that we do for a reason. Either we don’t like the look of them or we can’t imagine our kids accepting them.
